Marathon Training - Part 1: Planning

I’ve always wanted to run the Boston Marathon and the NYC marathon, these are some of the biggest marathons in the world and on many runners’ bucket lists. I had a plan in the back of my head for years to start training “sometime in the future” for the races and finally decided that “sometime” could be now.
2010 - SavageMan

2010 was a big year for triathlons for me, I did Ironman France in the early Summer, qualified for and competed at duathlon worlds in Edinburgh and did SavageMan just 2 weeks after that (along with a few shorter races here and there).
Pikes Peak Ascent Attempt - Part 3: The Climb

I made it up! Running up Barr Trail was definitely an amazing experience, and something I want to do again, and wanted to repeat before I even finished it the first time. The quick stats:
- Total time: 4:26:28
- Distance: 11.32 miles (avg 23:31/mile)
- Elevation gain: 7382ft
Pikes Peak Ascent Attempt - Part 2: Training Update

Here’s an update on my training for my Pikes Peak run, yes I plan to run up Pikes Peak. Don’t worry there’s a trail.
Pikes Peak Ascent Attempt - Part 1: History + the Start of a Plan

I’ll be visiting Colorado in a few weeks and one of the things I like to do in a new area is go for a run. It’s a nice way to see the place and get your bearings. In Colorado one of the planned stops is Pikes Peak and when looking up some information on it I learned there is a trail that goes to the summit so I thought it’d be a good idea to run up the mountain when I see it.
2010 - Ironman France

I have wanted to do an ironman distance triathlon (2.4mile swim/112mile bike/26.2mile run) ever since I found out about them as a child watching the Hawaii race on tv. I grew up swimming, had a running background from high school and got into biking not long after graduating college when a co-worker signed up for a triathlon and I thought that sounded like a good idea so I joined him. That first year I only did one triathlon, an olympic distance (1500m swim/40km bike/10km run), but I still had the ironman goal in the back of my mind, and a little less than two years after my first tri, I completed ironman France. I chose France because I wanted to leave the country and it lined up with training time lines and I took a bit of French in high school so maybe I’d remember some of it? I also considered New Zealand, but with a March race most of my long bike rides would have to be done in the winter and riding inside for just one hour is boring enough, 6 hours would be pushing the limits of sanity.
